Another alternative you can also use squid ink paste :) in a lot of chinese bakery, i always seen like squid ink bread too~ it's really nice :) you can't really taste much of it i guess the bakery put very little.

You can try with black glutinous rice instead . It would even look like the same as in the game since it has purple in it.

A recommendation I have is using some dark flour like rye to darken the color instead of charcoal. Also the buns look like theyre burnished rather than actually have brown dough, so maybe they're steamed then fried?
