I believe they learn that it helps clean dirt or tree sap etc better than using only water. As others have suggested , I don’t believe they know about the anti bacterial benefits of using it.

Growing up with orangutans here. At first when they were small, they just mimicking, more likely enjoying the bubbles. Then as they grow up they do come to understanding the mechanism of soaps (by years of observing). The orangutans i grew up with actually used the provided soap to clean their hands when mud got onto them. As for this vid, if this is the first time they got soap, probably they havent understood yet and still just mimicking
